Gaming PC's, Oculus Rift & Star Citizen

First let me say, balls on your chin. Now that that's out of the way. I hope you had a great last 2 weeks, because I sure as hell did. The site I told you about last post is doing great. Growing fast, and drawing visitors. Which is good.

During the long dog days of late summer, without basketball, or longboarding, I spend a LOT more time gaming. Something I am very passionate about. See, I'm a console gamer. Been one since NES. However, after the years of console driven sports titles, and the occasional Final Fantasy 7, I've always known there was something missing in my gaming world. Enter Star Citizen. Now I know i cant just jump from talking about consoles to one of the most anticipated PC games of all time without a little introduction and history first.

Star Citizen has no real comparison to anything in my gaming history because honestly, I've never heard of a game quite like it. Now, it's not out yet. It's scheduled to be release Q4 '2014, but check this video out and tell me you aren't as excited as I am.

I mean, infinite space, customizable ships, vast economy, flexible game system, passionate development team, AND a ravenous modding community, makes this the must own title of the decade in my opinion. Plus did you check the last item on the list? The Oculus Rift support?!

Let's talk about the Oculus Rift for a second, because if you haven't heard about this due to living under a rock or so, then, you might not have been blown away by all of the first time user video compilations on youtube. Here's the pitch video from Kickstarter.

So that solves that. Well, the being visually immersed thing. I'm not sure how people are going to work out controller-less movements, but it's safe to say, that this, is here to stay. Ill be heading to Indiecade 2013 in Culver City Ca on Oct 3rd to check one out. I can't wait. If anyone wants to donate $300 dollars for me to get a dev kit, I'm not going to stop you.

So this brings me to my future gaming computer. After AMD's announcement yesterday regarding the R9 290X GPU that they are dropping soon, I think im going to build a monster from scratch. Specifically to run Star Citizen at MAX settings. This is my rough idea right now...

Motherboard: Rampage IV Extreme
GPU: AMD R9 290X
CPU: Intel Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E 3.2GHz
Memory: CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3
PSU: Corsair Professional Series 760 Watt
Case: Bitfenix Prodigy M

More to come, but I think that'll be MORE than enough to get me out into the verse. Star Citizen baby. I see it in my gaming future.

Oh yea, and my birthday is in 2 days. See you in a week or so.

  2. I'm sooo excited for Star Citizen. My birthday is coming up too, and I've been seriously hinting to my boyfriend that I would love one of the preorder ships, notably the Origin Jumpworks 315p. I'm so sad the 350r is sold out, because that would've been my choice otherwise!

    2. Hey man, did you ever end up getting Star Citizen?

  3. Hey,

You can get a better CPU for the price.

You could get a 4770k or a 3770k and for higher end CPUs you need a CPU cooler. I would recommend a Corsair H100i or a high end noctua air cooling soloution.

  4. Maaan, we should totally do a GU fleet when Star Citizen is up and running. The post above represents exactly what i'll be doing in 2014.
We should gang up, abduct players and make them listen to Carl Sagan stuff, before letting them go without a scratch. :)))))

  7. Yo, Greydon, allow me if I may to suggest some changes to your up coming computer build. If I knew how to post pictures on this thing, I'd post up my rig. I've been a PC gamer since the 80's, and I've been building my own since the 90's.

    3 things:

If you are just going to be running a gaming rig, nothing else, a 3930k is wasted. Games really don't even fully take advantage of 4 cores, so you could go with a i5 4570k and save money, and get faster performance per core and clock for clock, or go for a 4770k and still have a lot of productivity, still saving money. Also, the new Ivy-Bridge E's are out, so if you want a work station, go with the 4930k.

Next up, the Asus Maximus IV Extreme is great, but the platform is dated, and unless you're going for an EXTREME cooling solution, the IV Extreme is wasted as its just an overclocking board. If you go for a 4570k/4770k, you can get the Asus Maximus VI Hero, save money, still have excellent overclocking potential and have WAY more Sata 3 ports to make the most of new SSDs.

On RAM, if you're just gaming and on the new haswell socket, just get 2x8gbs of 1600mhz ram. It's less pressure on the memory controller and consumes less power than the alternative. It will also help you get higher overclocks out of the processor.

Lastly, just a bonus, on a case, check out the NZXT Phantom 530 case. Lots of room for watercooling and its a pleasure to work with during the build. Lots and lots of room for cable management behind the motherboard tray, lots of space for internal radiators, 3 from 5.25" drive bays so you can have a dual bay reserviour and still have an optical drive if you need one.

Glad to hear you're coming over to PC gaming. ; )
